Fen-Phen Linked to Heart Valve Disease
Fen-Phen is a combination drug consisting of fenfluramine and phentermine and was used in weight loss pills. In 1997, Fen-Phen was withdrawn after it was linked to heart-valve disease.
American Home Products, now known as Wyeth, marketed fenfluramine, and later, a similar drug called dexfenfluramine. While Phentermine was not shown to cause harmful effects, fenfluramine usage was linked to heart valve disease and other dangerous side effects.
Wyeth made drugs marketed as Redux and Pondimin, which were used as the fenfluramine half of the fen-phen combination formula. Medical studies have linked Pondimin and Redux to heart valve disease as well.
About one-third of patients taking Fen-Phen in a study had evidence of heart valve disease, according to the Mayo Clinic.
In addition to heart valve disease, the use of fenfluramine and dexfenfluramine has been found to increase the risk of developing PPH (Primary Pulmonary Hypertension), a rare disease that causes the blood valves in the lungs to narrow.
