The weight-loss drug Redux was withdrawn from the market on Sept. 15, 1997, due to a link with heart-valve damage among patients. The Food & Drug Administration (FDA) approved the use of Redux, even though the agency suspected the drug could create high risks for patients.

Redux Linked to a Number of Deaths

Reports have linked Redux to 123 deaths. Redux lawsuits have been filed alleging heart-valve disease among patients in addition to an often fatal lung condition known as PPH, or Primary Pulmonary Hypertension.

American Home Products, the manufacturer for Redux, has agreed to pay or set aside $3.75 billion to settle lawsuits for the next 15 years stemming from the drug's link to heart-valve damage.

One study by the Boston University School of Medicine shows that 28 percent of Redux or Fen-Phen users have heart-valve damage.
