ace-bayou-bean-bag-chairs-recalled-after-two-child-deaths-reportedA recall has been issued effective August 22 for bean bag chairs manufactured by Ace Bayou Corp. because children can unzip the bags and crawl inside, which may lead to suffocation and death.

Two deaths have been attributed to the chairs; one a 13-year-old boy from McKinney, Texas, and the other a 3-year-old from Lexington, Kentucky. Both children were found inside of the chairs, where they likely suffocated or choked on the beads inside of the bean bags.

The recall is voluntary. Typically, non-refillable bean bag chairs have a standard design that prevents the zippers from being opened, or there is no zipper at all. The Ace Bayou chairs have two zippers which are not disabled; an exterior zipper on the fabric cover and a second zipper underneath to keep the polystyrene foam beads inside. The chairs were sold in a range of fabrics, colors and sizes. Shapes include round or an ‘L’ configuration.

The recall will affect approximately 2.2 million bean bag chairs. On the bean bag chairs, a label printed with ‘ACE BAYOU CORP’ is sewn along the seam. The chairs are manufactured in China, though Ace Bayou is located in New Orleans, Louisiana.

The affected models were sold at Bergner’s, Big Lots, Bon-Ton, Boston Store, Carson’s, Elder-Beerman, Herberger’s, Meijer, Pamida, School Specialty, Wayfair, Walmart and Yonkers stores online, and at Amazon.com, Meijer.com, Walmart.com and other online retailers. The chairs sold for anywhere between $30 and $100.

Consumers are warned to inspect the bean bag chairs for zippers that may be opened and to keep them away from children. Ace Bayou will provide a repair kit at no cost so consumers can permanently disable the zippers.
