Benicar®, a popular blood pressure medication, has been linked to several serious side effects including symptoms which mimic celiac disease, heart attacks, and death.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently required Benicar’s manufacturer to include these side effects on the drug’s warning label, however, Benicar was prescribed for over 10 years without these warnings. If you and your doctor were unaware that Benicar could cause these serious side effects, you may be able to recover compensation for your injuries in a lawsuit against the manufacturer.
Benicar May Cause Gastric Distress
Sprue-like enteropathy results in symptoms like:
- Diarrhea, nausea, and/or vomiting
- Inflammation in the stomach or intestines
- Malabsorption of nutrients
- Stomach cramps
- Unexplained weight loss
Multiple studies have linked Benicar to sprue-like enteropathy. This condition, which mimics celiac disease, occurred so often that the FDA required Benicar’s manufacturer to include warnings on the label advising patients that these gastrointestinal side effects may occur.
People suffering from the side effects of Benicar may have issues absorbing nutrients and fully digesting their food. Often these symptoms will be diagnosed as a severe gluten intolerance or celiac disease–however, removing gluten from the diet will not relieve the symptoms. Only when treatment with Benicar is stopped will a patient receive relief.
Heart Problems Associated with Benicar
As of June 2014, the FDA is requiring the makers of Benicar to add the results of several studies to the drug’s warning label. These studies indicate that there may be a link between Benicar and heart problems, and the FDA advises patients that some studies have connected high doses of Benicar to an increased risk of death in patients with Type II diabetes.
While the FDA continues to believe that the benefits of Benicar outweigh the risks for patients who have high blood pressure, people taking this drug should still be aware that serious heart complications can arise while taking Benicar.
