A federal jury in Huntington, West Virginia, has awarded the family of a deceased woman $1.25 Million. The jury found the maker of Pradaxa, Boehringer Ingelheim, failed to warn the risks associated with taking Pradaxa.
Betty Erelene Knight passed away in 2013. She was diagnosed with atrial fibrillation, which is an irregular heartbeat. She was originally prescribed warfarin, however, after seeing a television commercial about Pradaxa , her family asked about the drug. The doctor prescribed Knight Pradaxa. Knight suffered a heart attack in 2013, and was told to take Pradaxa, Plavix, and aspirin.
Shortly after starting this new regimen, she suffered a gastrointestinal bleeding and was hospitalized. After active bleeding was found, she was taken off medication. After she was released, she was given Pradaxa again. However, she remained weak and was frequently hospitalized. She suffered another heart attack.
The plaintiffs, Claude R. Knight and Claudia Stevens who are representatives of Betty Knight’s estate, alleged that Pradaxa was designed defectively because there is no agent to reverse bleeding caused by Pradaxa. Dr. Hazen Ashab, a board-certified gastroenterologist believed that Pradaxa contributed to Knights gastrointestinal bleeding.
The estate of Betty Erelene Knight was awarded in $250,000 in compensatory damages, and $1,00,000 in punitive damages.
Symptoms of Pradaxa Internal Bleeding
Pradaxa was first approved for use in the U.S. in October 2010. Similar to other anti-blood-clotting drugs, Pradaxa’s benefit of reducing the chance of a debilitating or fatal stroke comes with the risk of internal bleeding.
See your doctor if you are suffering from these symptoms:
• Unusual bruising or bleeding
• Red or black tarry stools
• Vomiting that either looks like coffee grounds or resembles blood
• Headaches and Dizziness
• Joint pain or swelling
• Weakness and swelling of the hands, feet, arms, ankles or lower legs
If you or a loved one has taken Pradaxa and has experienced any of the following ailments, contact your doctor immediately. If these symptoms are present, you or your loved one might be eligible for a future lawsuit and potential Pradaxa settlement. While nothing is legally guaranteed, please concentrate on your health.
