On Monday night, a Wayne County Sheriff’s deputy was seriously injured after chasing a suspect in Jesup.

According to WGCL, the suspect was traveling in a stolen car and would not stop for Sgt. Josh Kruger. A car chase ensued between the suspect and the deputy. Sgt. Kruger decided to take his police car down a different street than the suspect was on. When the suspect ran a stop sign, Sgt. Kruger crashed into the side of the suspect’s car.

The Georgia State Patrol reports the collision caused both vehicles to overturn and that the deputy was ejected from the car during the crash. Sgt. Kruger was taken to Memorial University Medical Center in critical condition.

The suspect, whose identity has not been released, was pronounced dead at the hospital.
