Doctors Warn Parents about the Dangers of Trampolines

The American Academy of Pediatrics is urging parents not to let their kids use trampolines for recreational use. According to the organization, trampolines caused almost 100,000 injuries in 2009.

Researchers also found that netting and other safety features manufacturers have added to trampolines do not reduce the injury risk for children.

Data from the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS) shows that children under the age of six are at the greatest risk for injury - they account for 25% of all emergency room evaluations. Young children tend to have more severe injuries such as fractures to the legs and spine.

Studies reveal trampoline falls are potentially catastrophic, sometimes resulting in paralysis or neurologic damage.
