FDA Warns Parents about Simply Thick

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is warning parents that a digestive aid, Simply Thick, may increase a baby’s chance of developing necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC). NEC is a disease that causes severe inflammation in the intestines.

Infants born prematurely are at a high risk for NEC.

The FDA reports that 22 infants developed NEC after consuming baby formula or breast milk mixed with Simply Thick. Out of those 22 infants, seven died.

In the past the FDA warned parents about giving the food thickener to premature babies, but now they have extended the warning to include all infants.

Parents who are currently using the product to thicken their baby’s milk should discontinue use immediately and contact a pediatrician. Additionally, parents should be aware of NEC symptoms such as green-colored vomit, bloated stomach, bloody stools, and lack of appetite. You should call your healthcare provider if an infant exhibits these symptoms.
