Halloween Safety Tips Aren’t Just for Children

Children aren’t the only ones who dress up in costumes and celebrate Halloween with fun, candy-filled parties. Adults are just as likely as children to don a Halloween costume and enjoy some candy at a party; however, adults are also likely to consume alcoholic beverages while enjoying Halloween.

Statistics show that children are four times more likely to be hit by a car on Halloween than on any other day of the year, and it’s estimated that about half of these car accidents are caused by drunk driving.

This Halloween, don’t let your decision to drink cause a tragedy. Below are some safety tips to follow if you’re attending or hosting a Halloween party where alcohol will be served. By following these Halloween safety tips, you’ll help ensure everyone has a safe and happy Halloween.

Driving on Halloween

Always designate a non-drinking driver to ensure everyone gets home safely. Be sure to choose your designated driver well in advance and before anyone begins drinking.

Keep a list of taxis, car services, or shuttles on hand in case your plans change with your designated driver. Write these services down or add them to your phone so you’re sure to arrive home safely in the event of a plan change.

Consider staying somewhere close to the Halloween event you’re attending. Make reservations at a nearby hotel or ask to stay with a friend who lives nearby.

Hosting a Halloween Party

As a host, it’s important to make sure everyone attending your party has a safe way home. Never let an inebriated person get behind the wheel of a car for any reason.

Make sure everyone at your party who is drinking alcohol is 21 years of age or older.

When serving alcohol, be sure to serve food as well. Partygoers are more likely to become intoxicated if they’re drinking on an empty stomach. Also, consider serving non-alcoholic beverages as drink options for designated drivers.

Be prepared for a guest to stay the night at your house if they cannot get home safely.

Keep a list of taxis, car services, or shuttles available for your guests just in case they do end up needing a safe ride home.
