According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), food-borne disease outbreaks in the U.S. caused by imported foods increased in 2009 and 2010.
The CDC believes that the increase is due to our food supply becoming even more global, exposing U.S. consumers to germs from all around the world. Reuters reports that between 2005 and 2010, 39 outbreaks and 2,348 illnesses were linked to imported foods from 15 countries. Almost half of the outbreaks occurred between 2009 and 2010.
Fish was the most common source of imported food illnesses, followed by spices. Forty-five percent of the imported foods causing outbreaks originated in Asia.
