General Motors (GM) announced they will be recalling 1.3 million vehicles due to the sudden loss of power steering capabilities.
Four of the affected models were also part of the recent GM ignition switch recall. That particular recall was due to a faulty part eventually linked to 13 deaths.
The following vehicles fall under the power steering recall:
- 2004 – 2006, 2008-2009 Chevrolet Malibu
- 2004 – 2006 Chevrolet Malibu Maxx
- 2004 – 2007 Saturn Ion
- 2008 – 2009 Saturn Aura
- 2005 – 2009 Pontiac G6
- 2009 – 2010 Chevrolet HHR
- 2010 Chevrolet Cobalt
Drivers will know instantly if their power steering system fails because a chime and dashboard message will display. At that point the vehicle can be steered without power assist, but will require more force to steer at lower speeds.
GM will be notifying owners, and dealers will perform one of four bulletins. The parts required to repair the defect are currently not available, but owners will be mailed an additional letter notifying them about contacting a dealer for repairs when they are.
No accidents or injuries have been reported.
