The Food and Drug Administration announced that a recent salmonella outbreak that left more than 100 people sick in 20 states and the District of Columbia was caused by yellowfin tuna. Five salmonella cases have been reported in Georgia.
According to the Associated Press, Moon Marine USA Corp., also known as MMI is voluntarily recalling over 58,000 pounds of raw yellowfin tuna. The tuna was labeled as Nakaochi Scrape AA or AAA when it was sold to grocery stores and restaurants, but the product was not sold to individual consumers. Restaurants and grocery stores use the tuna product to make sushi, ceviche and sashimi. Many of the people that contracted salmonella reported eating sushi, in particular “spicy tuna.”
