Byetta, also known as exenatide, is commonly prescribed to those with Type 2 diabetes to help control blood sugar levels. Byetta is injected into the blood stream, causing the pancreas to secrete insulin when the patient’s sugar level is too high.
Byetta has been linked to serious side effects, including, but not limited to:
- The onset of acute pancreatitis (a sudden inflammation of the pancreas)
- Necrotizing and hemorrhagic pancreatitis
- Kidney failure
Byetta was introduced to the market in 2005. From 2005 to 2008, the FDA received 78 reports of kidney function problems in patients using Byetta. The FDA noted that some cases occurred in patients with pre-existing kidney disease or in patients with one or more risk factors for developing kidney problems.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in October 2007 informed healthcare providers that the agency had received reports of at least 30 cases of acute pancreatitis associated with the use of Byetta. The agency issued a second alert in August 2008 informing healthcare providers of six reported cases of hemorrhagic and necrotizing pancreatitis that were linked to at least two deaths.
