Manufactured by Eli Lilly and Company, Prozac is an anti-depressant commonly known as fluoxetine and used to treat major depressive disorders, bulimia nervosa (an eating disorder) obsessive-compulsive disorder, panic disorder and premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD).

How Prozac Works

Prozac, or fluoxetine (the generic term for the brand name), works by increasing the activity of a chemical called serotonin in the brain.

Prozac side effects have included violent behavior, either harming themselves or others. Some users developed a serious side effect known as akathisia, which could lead to violent or suicidal behavior among a small percentage of users.

Hundreds of lawsuits alleging Prozac has caused suicide and violent behavior have been filed against Eli Lilly.
