The local Bicycle Advisory Committee is working to educate locals across the island, including the fire department and avid cyclists as well as vacationers, on paying attention while on the road.

There are more than 60 miles of public recreational pathways on the island. However, drivers and cyclists are still confused about who has the right of way in an intersection. The confusion often leads to dangerous near-misses andbicycle accidents.

Local laws dictate that motor vehicles have the right of way, but if a pedestrian or bicyclist is in the crosswalk, then the driver must yield the right of way to them.

It should also be noted that motor vehicles must provide at least three feet of space when passing a bicyclist. Additionally, bicyclists in the area may lawfully ride two abreast in a single lane.

The committee is currently asking the town to create better safety measures in weaker areas. Several more pathway connections are planned for Pembroke Drive and Jarvis Creek Park, as well as a connection from the Chaplin Community to Shelter Cove Lane.
