Out of concern for their health, more people walk to get from point A to point B than ever before. People see walking and running as an acceptable form of exercise and recreation.
You may be surprised to learn that walking is more dangerous today than it has been at any other time in human history. The proliferation of motor vehicles has led to an increase in accidents involving motor vehicles and pedestrians. Nothing is protecting a pedestrian if they are hit by a motor vehicle. Therefore, the injuries they suffer can be severe or deadly.
The CDC reports that in the United States in 2017, more than 5,977 pedestrians lost their lives in traffic accidents. During that same time, 137,000 pedestrians were injured in non-fatal accidents and required emergency room treatment.
