Baycol is prescribed to patients to help control excess cholesterol in the bloodstream that leads to hardening of the arteries and heart disease.
Baycol Side Effects
The use of Baycol, also known as cerivastatin sodium, has been linked to kidney failure, muscle cell damage, and at least 100 deaths since it was introduced to the market. Manufactured by Bayer A.G. Pharmaceutical, Baycol was withdrawn from the market in 2001 after reports of fatal rhabdomyolysis, the rapid destruction of skeletal muscle.
Symptoms of rhabdomyolysis include (but are not limited to):
- Muscle aches and pain
- Muscle weakness
- Darkening of urine
Sometimes, those suffering from rhabdomyolysis show no symptoms at all until it is too late.
