truck drags car on freeway for nearly a mile

A 34-year-old driver was in a harrowing situation last month after his red sedan was dragged along the 15 freeway in the Cajon Pass just outside Los Angeles by a semi-truck for nearly a mile.

The incident was captured on video by Brian Steimke and showed the Nissan Maxima wedged beneath the left rear the truck. The driver of the truck continued traveling along the northbound lanes of the 15 freeway as the driver of the sedan, later identified as Javiar A. Diaz Jr., tried to get the truck to stop.

“He’s not stopping,” Diaz shouted to Steimke in desperation. The unbelievable footage was shared on to Steimke’s Facebook page where it has been viewed more than 6 million times.

Several drivers watching the scene unfold honked to get the truck driver’s attention before the slow-moving tractor trailer finally came to a halt.

According to the California Highway Patrol, Pete Edward Maestas drove a truck hauling 50,000 pounds of carrots through the Cajon Pass when he came across a slower moving truck in the right lane.

He attempted to pass the truck by changing lanes the same time as Diaz. That’s when the front right end of the sedan became lodged beneath the truck.

Jerrone Thomas, who also filmed the incident, told KCAL9 News that it looked like the truck driver had no idea that there was anything wrong.

“He’s dragging him for the better part of a mike, he’s just unaware,” he said, “I don’t know.”

Thomas was finally able to get the truck to stop by pulling in front and blocking the road.

“I got in front of the truck and thought, here goes nothing and stopped the guy,” he said.

Despite being shaken up and a little sore, Diaz did not need hospitalization and said he was lucky to be alive.

The California Highway Patrol said the accident was not considered a criminal incident and that the truck driver did not show any signs of impairment. Although his log book appeared to be in compliance, he may still be cited for improperly changing lanes and causing the accident, police told CBS2’s Tina Patel.
