A two-car accident occurred at the intersection of Ogeechee and Chevis roads in Savannah Sunday morning, prompting the response of the Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department and Southside Fire and EMS personnel.
According to WTOC News, the accident came just a day after an off-duty Tybee Island police officer was killed in a motorcycle crash at the same intersection.
Officer Tron Lewis of the Tybee Island Police Department was riding his motorcycle northbound on Saturday morning before colliding with an SUV making a turn from the southbound lanes of Ogeechee Road, according to WJCL News. He died at the scene and the driver of the SUV was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
“We learned today of the tragic accident that took the life of one of Tybee’s police officers,” Tybee Mayor Jason Buelterman told WJCL News shortly after the accident. “Tron Lewis was an excellent officer. He served our citizens and visitors very effectively and represented our City with dignity and honor. He will be sorely missed. We pray for his wife, family, friends and his fellow officers during this difficult time.”
Lewis was said to be well-liked in the community for his professionalism and compassion in all he did for the police force, according to Tybee Island Council Member Julie Livingston.
The SCMPD Traffic Investigations Unit is still investigating that crash to find out who was at fault in the accident. No additional information about injuries was reported about the Sunday morning accident.
